FlumeAward – The 5th Wave The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
It’s been a while since I read this book and I’m not clear on the details still, but I read this over a weekend because I couldn’t put it down. This was a very creative alien invasion story. There is no clear cut alien in the book, instead they have invaded our species and inserted themselves into our genome. It takes the notion of the terrorist sleeper cell a step further. A very smart and well written book. Should definitely be on the list. Sylvie B. Nesmith Library
Wow. Wowwowwowwowwow(That’s 5 wow’s, by the way). The 5th Wave begins with a teenage girl who has survived the first four waves of an alien invasion on earth. Her wry humor and kick-arse view of apocalyptic life, mixed with the vulnerability of potentially being the last human on earth drew me in immediately. Rick Yancey tells this incredible twist on an alien invasion from multiple points of view. Each character has a different voice and gives dimension to the invasion. While there are multiple characters, there are two protagonists(one male, one female) that tell the majority of the story. It’s not super lovey-dovey and sexed-up like the Twilight series, but there is a super sweet romance that blooms within the pages, breaking the tension of war just enough. Love, love this book! It needs to be on the list. -Aubrey, The Goodwin Library
4 stars – The plot had some slow spots but several surprises kept me wanting to read more. Cassie was not my favorite main character but in all fairness she has some strong contenders in the sci-fi/dystopian arena. I look forward to the sequel to see how her character grows and to find answers to the cliffhanger ending. ~ Lois Powers, Kimball Library (Atkinson)
I haven’t read this one yet myself, as it’s usually out, but the kids who read it come in dying for the sequel & looking scandalized that I haven’t read it yet.

I’m DELIGHTED to see this book as a nomination. What an extraordinary, action-packed, unique, interesting story. I love Yancy’s work for the pure adventure and page-turning thrills, and this one’s no exception. Along with others who have commented, I highly recommend this one for the list. I couldn’t put it down, and it’s seen many circulations here in Rye. Hope it makes the final cut!
