This is the first in a series, and ends on a cliffhanger. I went into it expecting your average paranormal romance but I really enjoyed the story. Lots of weird imagery, and a twisted mystery with some paranormal stuff going on that didn’t really show up until the end of the book. I rated it 4 stars on Goodreads which is really high for me. – Katie Spofford, Wadleigh Memorial Library
Mara is recovering from an accident in which three of her friends died. She thinks she’s responsible. Not only that, but she’s seeing things like her dead friends in the mirror behind her, her dead boyfriend on the campus of her new school, even going so far as to fish jewelry out of a scalding bath, only to find herself still wearing them, but with 2nd degree burns on her arm to show for her efforts.
This was a good mix of new-girl blues, guilt, and paranormal activity. I particularly liked Mara’s relationships with both Jamie and Noah, as well as the closeness of her family, even if they’re not quite sure how to deal with her.
The ending was such a cliff-hanger, that I do need to continue with the series, and read The Evolution of Mara Dyer, to see how Mara deals with this book’s revelations.
Definitely a book for older teens. Local readers may enjoy the fact that Mara’s a New England girl now struggling to acclimate to Florida.
