FlumeAward – The Fold Discussion page for The Fold by An Na
This book was a refreshing change of pace from what I normally select. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the characters in this book about a close-knit Korean family, whose main character is in high school feeling the normal pangs that teens go through (worrying about looks, popularity, life choices after high school, boys, best friends, etc.). I would recommend this book. – Judi Shea, Nashua High School South
I enjoyed this book. It’s a good read, realistic, and takes you into the world of a Korean-American community in Southern California. The main character shares the worries of most teen girls, including that she isn’t pretty enough, (her older sister is beautiful.) Her wealthy aunt decides to pay for surgery to put a fold in her eyelids, so that her eyes will look bigger (and more "white.") Friends and family pressure her both to do it and not to do it. The book brings up interesting questions about race and beauty, and expectations of family and community. Will appeal more to girls but I’d definitely recommend it for the list. –Joan, Derry PL
