FlumeAward – The Last Song

FlumeAward – The Last Song Discussion page for The Last Song.

We all know what his books entail, but the kids don’t care about this one. The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, and Dear John are the ones the teens at my school read. This is newer so it hasn’t gone out as much, but the topics are better than some of his other books.

just read this book and loved it. It’s about a teenage girl and her relationship with her boyfriend, father, and mother. It’s about regrets and choices. I was excited to see that this will be a movie, and I’m planning to take my teenage daughter to see it with me.

Tearjerker…no boy would read it. Girls will love it. The movie tie-in will make it a must read for younger teens as it stars Miley Cyrus. But it is an adult book, not for young teens. Older teens who vote on the Flume books will certainly enjoy it. But definitely a girl book. Although there are parts boys would enjoy, such as teens playing with fire. It is all about choices and consequences. Family relationships and divorce play a big part. I enjoyed it, but it would not be my first choice for the list.

Another sappy Nicholas Sparks book. I have issues with knowing if and who and how a character is going to die at the end, b/c, given the character cast, that means that the entire story arc is obvious right from the beginning. That said, Sparks is a master at tugging at the heartstrings. He really knows how to string out the tear-jerking.
I imagine that this book will appeal to teenage girls, and to others who do not mind mindless drivel. (I know…this coming from an avid romance novel reader! But, I guess, I like to choose my poison of mindless drivel, and this isn’t it.)

Despite the movie (and many teen girls saw it) the book is still not one of the popular Sparks’ books at our school.

Sparks is not popular with my YA’s. If you have read his other books, this follows the same formula. It is a tear-jerker and may appeal to a few teen girls, but I don’t think it merits being on the list unless we need more girl books.
