FlumeAward – The Strain Discussion page for The Strain by Guillermo del Toro
A thriller where vampires are actually evil and pretty disgusting. Lots of action. It isn’t flying off the shelves here, but it’s moderately popular and I’ve definitely seen teens checking it out. – Katie Spofford, Wadleigh Memorial Library
I really like this book. It’s creepy and gross and full action. I’ve already read #2 and am looking forward to #3. The author is the director of Hell Boy and Pan’s Labyrinth so I think teens would find that interesting.

This book scared me and at times completely repulsed me, but, boy, did it keep my attention! It is an excellent antidote for the vampire-romance books. (You’ll never look at vampires the same way…) Well written, lots of action, and fun "scientific" explanations of popular vampire lore. (The audiobook version was excellent, btw!)

I agree with Bobbi that it is an antidote for the vampire/romance novels (gag) and I liked the way that the vampires developed almost like a viral cancer taking over and ruling the body. I on the other hand found myself bored with the tedious vampire slayings. That said, I think that there is a market for this and obviously there are sequels coming. I did totally object to the book ending with an alcoholic taking his first drink in years. I think that this will draw a certain audience. ~ Sharon Flesher-Duffy, Nashua High South
