Fabulous book — I think it would make an excellent addition to the FLUME list.
Although I haven’t read this book of eight short stories myself, Tricia, our assistant director, thinks it would be an excellent choice and could definitely make the final 13 – it was really that good. This is an adult book which would translate beautifully to teens. With this recommendation, I’ll be reading it myself soon!

I loved this story collection. It was interesting how the first few stories were unrelated, except for the Bengali background of the characters, but the last few told the story from different perspectives, at different times, of one couple. As the stories are told from an adult perspective, even if they are telling the story of their respective childhoods, I’m not sure these would be appropriate for younger teens, but the 9-12 grade set should be OK. It is also equally appropriate for girls and boys.
As much as I love this book, I don’t know that I’d really recommend it for the final 13, just because it’s clearly an adult book, written for an adult audience, dealing with adult issues, such as complaisance in marriage, adultery, dealing with elderly parents having already established independence.
