While an extremely worthy of the Flume list, this book (according to my Jacky Faber expert) really should be read as part of the series. She said that it could stand alone, but some relationships wouldn’t be very clear as characters from previous novels reappear. Probably not a good choice for the list.

Speaking personally, I absolutely love this series! It’s like Hornblower or Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series, but better, because it’s YA and features a girl/young woman. It definitely is part of a series, though, unfortunately. I think the whole series deserves attention. But singling out the one recent book is probably not the way to do so.
