FlumeAward – Scan Scan by Walter Jury and S.E.Fine
This was pretty great. Took a little bit to get into, as the author took time to build character and exposition, but it paid off. Heavy on action and intrigue, sweet and sexy relationship between the two central teens, has enough sci-fi for traditional sci-fi fans, but also eases into it in a way that could bring new readers to the genre, those who’d be drawn to it for the action angle… The premise is sort of funny to me, as it reeks of someone’s crazy conspiracy theory found correct, but that added to the fun. Great cliffhanger to lead to its eventual sequel. One of my teens was one who nominated this title, and he reads a lot, but rarely loves a title. I expected to hate this from the very beginning. Wrestling? Um, no. Aliens? Nope. But then the action drew me in.
The story of Tate and his friends and family was relatively interesting until people started shooting at them, and then the pace really picked up. I was emotionally involved right up until the big cliffhanger. For a book that I wanted not to like, I was pretty perturbed that it just cut off without resolving anything. I will have to read the next book some day.
Good for middle school and up, both boys and girls. Although, it will appeal primarily to boys, from the cover and description.

I also liked this more than I thought I would. The action was great – there were strong male and female characters – both multidimensional. My only concern is the cliff-hanger of an ending. This books really doesn’t stand alone.
