FlumeAward – Skunk Girl Discussion page for Skunk Girl
Synopsis: Nina, a Pakistani, Muslim living in small-town NY, finds it hard to reconcile her family and religious traditions (no sleepovers, no dating, no parties) with life in an American high school. It seems that her friends are moving on without her with their new experiences and love interests, and then she starts crushing on the new boy in town.
Review: Over time I have worked with several students who are Muslim and have struggled with similar concerns and issues as Nina, the main character in this book. This story seems realistic and offers these students a place to see themselves in literature as well as shares their perspective with others. This is a strong story, full of intelligent humor that would appeal mostly to girls. ~ Sharon Flesher-Duffy, Nashua High South
