It would be an interesteing juxtaposition to holocaust books. There is a lot to discuss. The role of art and artistic expression adds a nice dimension to the story. I would recommend this book. It could had a historical perspective to the list and a nice balance to the pop fiction titles that might otherwise dominate our list.
Gail Zachariah, Keene Public Library

Fifteen-year-old Lina enjoys her friends, her art, and her life that is until the day in June of 1941 when the NKVD arrested her and her family, herded them into trucks then trains, and transported them to a labor camp in Siberia. This story is about her family’s fight for survival when Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia were occupied by the Russians. The Russians created lists of those considered anti-Soviet and deported them. This story was created using the experiences related to the author by survivors of this overlooked segment of history. I think this would offer a great historical fiction component to the NH Teen Reader list. It certainly made me appreciate the ease of walking my dogs in 20 degree, windy weather. ~ Sharon Flesher-Duffy, Nashua High South

A wonderful alternative to Anne Frank. I have recommended this title to teen girls who need to read historical fiction. This book was an education on the dissolution of three European countries and their citizens by the Russians. Though heart wrenching, I couldn’t put it down. This needs to be on the Flume list!
Denise Schaaf, Goffstown Public Library

This is a ‘holocaust’ style book but with new history to learn. In 1941, 15 year old Lina is preparing for school and summer like any other Lithuanian girl. One night the Soviet secret police and deports her along with her mom and brother. Lina’s father is sentenced to death in a prison camp. This story is one of survival. You will marvel at the power of love, the will to survive, and the nature of the human spirit. This story not only needed to be told, but it needs to be read. Totally recommend for the list.
Kathy Watson
Kimball Library, Atkinson

FlumeAward – Between Shades of Gray //Between Shades of Gray// by Ruta Sepetys This is a good book about a topic that is rarely written about.
