Very well done and extremely exciting science fiction. A definite winner.

This incredibly well-written, taut and somewhat disturbing novel will not fail to engage our Flume-aged readers! Patrons who have read the book, my own family, and I all agree that it’s a page-turner. I had even read that Stephenie Meyer brought it out to dinner with her and hid the book under the table, reading when she could. It really is THAT good. I neglected many a chore to keep reading this one! spoiler… A futuristic novel in which the US no longer exists, but is replaced with districts. The government controls everything, the poorer districts struggle to meet basic needs and our narrator Katniss hunts illegally outside the district enclosure to feed her family. Each year, two kids – one male, one female from each district – are randomly drawn to attend The Hunger Games. They are prepped and made worthy of their impending television appearances. The goal of the game is to be the winner – by killing the other contestants. This is a really creepy commentary on reality tv, for one thing, and shows absolute control by the government. The interractions of the contestants is fascinating. An unusual story, but reminds me a little of the movie "Roller Games" that I saw when I was way too young! This book should definitely be on the culled list. -Lisa Houde / Rye Public Library

Lisa says it all, a terrific book! I am hungry for the next one.
Sharon
Weeks Public Library

Perfect title for this age group despite very abrupt ending. Definite yes for list.
Christine
Stephenson Memorial Library

The Isinglass committee is also considering this one…what a great story with a cliffhanger ending….the next one comes out in Sept. 2009 and I can’t wait! Amy Inglis Barrington

I too can not wait for the sequel and loved every minute of this fast paced psychological thriller. Yes it is science fiction but the thoughtful way the main characters try to survive their participation in the hunger games makes it worth a second read. Linda Sherouse

Yes, yes, yes, add the book to the list. The kids LOVE It. We have teachers who are reading it to their students each day in advisory and reading classes.
Kelly Budd, Keene High School

Loved this book and have book talked it to YAs of both genders.
-Catherine Callegari, Troy Public Library

I don’t think we even need to discuss this book. It should just be put right on the final list of nominees.
