I too thought the free verse form added to the intensity of the brutal story. I have to agree that its appeal will be to girls rather than boys.
Sally Nelson, Leach Library

This is an incredibly powerful book. It reads quickly, and the story is simple enough that one doesn’t get bogged down in the political situations. May hold more appeal to girls than boys. Diane @ Laconia

Edgy, today’s slavery. Girl sold into prostitution in India. Beautifully written in free verse, totally believable and very powerful. Definitely for the older teen girl. Jean Grout, Exeter

The free verse in the book will highly captivate teenage girls as well as the mature themes. We had an amazing book discussion revolving around this book. I strongly recommend this book for the Flume list.
Kathy Watson
Kimball Library

I think the poetry form of the narrative is great for allowing readers to feel the emotional weight of the story without having to hear the graphic details. It has not been hugely popular but it does get checked out quite a bit (as opposed to McCormick’s book Cut, which is constantly checked out). – Katie Spofford, Wadleigh Memorial Library

PUT THIS BOOK ON THE LIST!! What an incredible story, one that is devastating and heart-breaking but beautifully told in verse. I had just read Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott, and honestly, I shouldn’t have read this one right after that – a little too much reality all at once – but Sold should be on the list for so many reasons, most of them listed by readers above! This book, unlike Living Dead Girl, offers a bit of hope for the main character who suffers so greatly. Definitely has more girl appeal, however.
Lisa Houde
Rye Public Library

FlumeAward – Sold Discussion page for Sold This is a gripping novel, full of stark reality without graphic details.
