However, I had to make myself finish it. With the loss of her mother, Sandinista isolated herself from school and her friends, finding a job in a quirky second hand clothing shop. The book also touches on the lack of the school system to recognize her despair and get her the help she needs. There is a monk that comes and goes throughout the story. If there is a religious significance, I missed it.
