There is some explanation of past events, but most of the description in the first few chapters involves the heroine’s feelings of betrayal and surprise to others’ behaviors (such as her mother, her dream guy, creepy agent dude, etc), but I couldn’t identify with her as I didn’t know how they had acted in the past. The action & plot kicks in after the 2nd chapter, and gets going fast after that, but you have to wade through 2-3 chapters that just don’t connect unless you’ve read the first book (Death By Bikini). As a side note, however, several teens (boys & girls) have commented how much they love this series, and want more. So, I’m off to read #1, then re-read #2, then #3, and I would recommend it to YA collections with action/mystery/spy fans. But I don’t feel it stands alone.

-Lucia V.
