It is a very contemporary story, for a girl audience. Sabine or Bean is a normal teenage girl who enjoys “retail therapy”, until a minivan driving “scrunchie wearing skank” beans her with debris from her mcfatty meal, this will be a life altering change for Sabine. Sabine quits her job at Gap to work at the whole foods market, and decides to care about how her actions impact the world. What I ended up liking about the book is that Sabine struggles with her decisions. Great character development, best friends turn away and come back, new unlikely friends emerge. Susan Petrikas – Seabrook

I liked this better than The Carbon Diaries. It shows a girl wending her way through caring about the environment, and caring about herself- with lots of current cultural references. It does have sexual references and language. I’m a fan of how the main character can turn away from a relationship when she realizes that the boy is not who she thought he was, despite the fact that she is attracted to him. It gets the environmental message across without being preachy, in fact it even has some characters chiding the main character for preaching on the environment. I think this is a contender for the final list. -Beth Strauss, Pelham High School

FlumeAward – Earthgirl Discussion page for Earthgirl. At first I was not sure I was going to like this book, but it grew on me.
