Airhead by Meg Cabot is definitely a girl book. I doubt very much that it would appeal to boys. It is not quite the fluff piece that I envisioned, and it definitely stretches the realm of realistic fiction. Any one who manages to stick with it will soon realize that everything will get worked out quickly and badly or that there is a sequel. I, myself, was very put out that there is a sequel, because I wanted to know more than what was in this book, but don’t really want to read the sequel. It wasn’t really well written enough to make me want to read number two.
It didn’t make the list last year, and I think there are better options out there. (3-5-10)

This book has gone out regularly since it hit our shelves, due to the author’s popularity- we had reserves for the recent sequel too.
Not Cabot’s best, and I found it oddly sad- a horrible accident that forces this girl into a life she hates, and might not ever escape. The character’s struggles to maintain her past identity & lifestyle in her new body also made me sad- almost as though she were haunting her old life, without having actually died (although her friends believe she has). An interesting read, and not as fluffy as one may think from the cover- the back cover is much more in line with the story & overall feel.

*update: read #2, where it gets darker, and it leads right to #3 (yes, another sequel, not out yet), where the intrigue & action looks to heat up even more. #2 was just as sad as #1, particularly when she realizes she can’t be included in her family’s holiday, as her grandma thinks she’s dead. But, there are bright spots in the story as well. Cabot fans will enjoy the series.
Once I got over the device of a brain transplant (it took me a looong while), I thought the issues brought up by the switch were interesting. I was surprised that I wanted to know what happended to this character in book #2 but I too wish it had wrappd up in one novel. I am getting tired of sequels but the kids do dive in and ask for #2. Not the best book ever but it had humor, a little more grit than expected from the cover, and could suck in reluctant girl readers.
