FlumeAward – Ana’s Story Discussion page for Ana’s Story
I can’t say I recommend this one. I read it in one afternoon; the writing is simplistic, seems like it’s been told by a child, although the content is certainly not childlike. Jenna Bush attempts to tell the story of Ana, a child who was born HIV+, loses her parents early in life, is beaten and abused by various family members, and ends up getting pregnant at age 16. I certainly felt sadness for Ana, but the writing stood in the way of it being genuine and heart-filled. The messages about HIV/Aides were pretty clear, and many resources are listed for kids to check out as far as aids and abuse. I can’t see it being a popular pick for teens – I would not add it to the list.

I would have to agree, Lisa. The book has beautiful photographs and the concept is great. But the writing makes it seem like it could be on the Isinglass List, if not Great Stone Face. The content would be the only thing precluding this. I read it in about 3 hours-there has to be another non-fiction title we could consider.
