FlumeAward – Columbine Discussion page for Columbine by Dave Cullen
I was very moved by this book. It was really interesting to read about all the inaccuracies that the news media propogated surrounding the event. Of course, I was in college during the Columbine shootings, while the teens reading this were too young to remember the news media blitz, but have probably heard about it all their lives. I don’t read a lot of nonfiction yet this captured my interest – I hadn’t realized how affected I had been by Columbine. I think it would be an interesting choice.

This book was fascinating and thought provoking and would make for great discussions. However, it is TOO LONG for most teen readers. We need to have nonfiction on our list, but I’m afraid teens would not pick this up simply because of the length.

I was enthralled by this book, but I think it was because I remember the time and media hype so vividly. I don’t know if teens would read this title, as mentioned, due to the length. BUT, somebody nominated it–so maybe I’m wrong. -Diane Lynch, Laconia Library
I read this book after a workshop on school violence. It was interesting in that it showed how inaccurate the media was, and offered some insight as to what was going on in those boys’ heads. Parts of the book are quick going, but other parts really drag. I am not sure that I would recommend it due to the unevenness of the accounts. Sharon Flesher-Duffy, Nashua High South
This is a deeply moving book, probably because I remember the events so clearly. I would like to see it on the list because I think there are many teens who would read it. I don’t read nearly enough non-fiction but a lot of teens, especially boys, do.
