Dragonfly

FlumeAward – Dragonfly Discussion page for Dragonfly.

I really enjoyed this book. With the action, adventure, humor and an unfolding love story it may appeal to both boys and girls.

Although by the end, I was thoroughly involved, and needed to know what became of the characters, Dragonfly read like a Harlequin romance set for children. It had the arranged marriage, the feuding couple thrown into a dangerous adventure, which, of course, made them fall in love with each other, then, the requisite separation, and joyous reunion with a happily ever after ending. The only thing missing was the passionate lovemaking to seal the deal.
Even though it was a fantasy, there was way too much explication, so between the cliched plot and the droning on and on, it was difficult to get into the book. With all that, the two main cultures were clearly drawn, and the third person narration made the book equally appealing to boys and girls, as it followed both Tashi and Ramil’s thoughts and adventures.
I found myself wondering if this was a first effort for Golding, even knowing that she’s got several books under her belt, none of which I have read, so I can’t speak to the quality of her other books. It just seemed amateurish. I am curious now, though.
