Synopsis: Avery’s superhuman powers make him feel alone in the world. He has had to drop out of wrestling after breaking a fellow wrestler’s arm, and has cost his parents’ money after loosing control of his strengths in other arenas. After an incident when he was on the prowl one night looking for people to save, his parents enroll him in an alternative school where he meets other students with extraordinary strengths. They band together to help people and to learn how to harness their strengths. And then there is Cherchette, the woman who continuously promised to help them.
Review: Interesting, worth reading. This book would appeal to both boys and girls, especially younger high school students. There is enough action here to keep one reading and the underlying theme of teens trying to fit in will ring true with many readers. This could be in the top 13 depending on other selections. This is a very interesting novel. Part of the appeal is that I’ve not read a book like this before, and the concept of superhero teens is fun. There is criticism that the characters are not developed enough, but I think this is a Flume worthy choice namely because it’s not like all the rest. It has intrigue, action, boy/girl appeal, and humor. DULL BOY has it all – humor, friendship, family issues, a little romance, super-powers. What more could you ask for? As a reader, I completely fell in love with Avery. Sarah Cross leaves the reader completely satisfied, even though it is clear there will be a sequel.
