FlumeAward – Fan Art Fan Art by Sarah Tregay
This book was adorable, basically a cute love story about a boy who is not openly gay who has a crush on his best friend. The way the art girls treated Jamie and Mason reminded me of fangirls online who ship two male characters, only in this case it wasn’t just them imagining a relationship. There were many times when the tension between Jamie and Mason was so thick I wanted to scream at Jamie to just tell Mason already! Nothing became too angsty or serious, and I found myself smiling as I read the ending. I enjoyed how the poetry and comics from the literary magazine were sprinkled between the chapters, and lent more depth to some of the secondary characters. Quite a few teens at my library have loved this book.

I loved this story of doing what’s right, standing up for what you believe, love, and friendship. I loved reliving the uncertainty of first love, compounded by the fact that Jamie knows he’s gay, and is out to his parents, but hasn’t come out to his best friend, Mason, with whom he now finds himself in love. The relationship of these high school seniors felt authentic, which, in turn, made me feel for for them, with them.
A great book for guys and girls high school and up. I think this would be great on the final list.
My only complaint, and I imagine it’s because I’m not, nor have I ever been, a teenaged guy: the lusting after cute guys seemed excessive to me. I understand that we’re supposed to get that Jamie’s totally into guys, but it felt like there was too much there, especially since he was supposed to be so into Mason.
