Reese finds himself locked up in Progress, a juvenile offender facility after stealing prescription pads from a doctor’s office. He has been chosen to participate in a work detail in a nursing home and slowly becomes friends with Mr. Hooft who shares his life experiences including being locked up on a children’s camp during World War II. Reese is determined to leave Progress and help his sister realize her goal of going to college, but needs to learn to survive living at Progress without getting himself in trouble. This story outlines his pathway to his goal. This would certainly appeal to students in my school – at least the boys but I think the girls as well. Great story for boys and reluctant readers. I flew through this book. Reese needs to keep his nose clean in jail so that he can escape the life that everyone feels is his destiny. Easier said than done. Meeting Mr. Hooft through his job at a nursing home, helps him realize his goal. Well written.

I have SENIOR boys reading this book and devouring the series (and typically, senior boys read very little!). This seems perfect for the Flume list!! Action, adventure, mystery.
