Lego Club at our library.
I set out the LEGOs® each week (We have a large tote full donated by a patron) and when kids come in (ages 5-9) I usually give them a small challenge to make – a rocket, chair, maze for marbles, etc. Ex: Yesterday I set out trays with the exact same number of LEGO® bricks each with one unique piece (could have been a window, ladder, vehicle front, etc.) and told them all that the challenge was to make something using ALL the pieces – 10 minutes, go!
Near the end of the meeting they tell me about what they made – and make up a story to go with it if they can. I’ve found as each week goes by they get better at telling me about their creation. It has been a great ‘play’ time for them, and they have been learning to imagine and express themselves along the way! Bonus! We display their creation on a narrow shelf in the library.
